Money Mindset
Our Money Mindset is our unconscious or conscious, emotional capacity for financial flow. It’s how our feelings and beliefs dictate how much we give and receive, how much we ask for and how much we share.
We have all been negatively affected by toxic money mindsets. Toxic Money Mindsets preserve cycles of abuse, manipulation, and trauma. Our financial systems reflect our toxicity and nowadays we’re seeing how the earth and life are responding to our greed - with extinction and climate change.
On a personal scale, toxic money mindsets impact us via whoever raised us and the cultures we grow up in. When our parents or caretakers feel so scared about money, regardless how much they have, we never learn to work with it effectively. So we take those scarcity practices, behaviors that keep us stuck & frustrated with money, into our adulthood. We can get in our own way just by inheriting toxic money mindsets. It’s not our fault, but if we’re going to be more collectively and personally abundant, we have to take active responsibility to . . . change our minds and financial behaviors.
Healthy Money Mindsets help heal communities, families, and individuals because our choosing our financial flow builds trust, accountability, and increases our capacity for joy. However, only focusing on our money mindsets blocks us from the whole story, our mindsets are not enough on their own to heal scarcity.
Beyond Money Mindset
Even a healthy Money Mindset isn’t worth much if we’re not being it - if we’re not aligning our mindsets, heart, & actions to BE in integrity. Many money coaches only address the mindset and not the being & integrity piece. Focusing on your Money Mindset is an important practice of awareness, but your mindset is only a part of a greater whole. When mindset is the only focus, we often miss essential wisdom and kindness, which creates disembodied ideologies that cause further harm.
Traditional Money Mindset philosophy manifested as a thought experiment and not a rooted, bodily experience. This disconnect has caused epigenetic shame and guilt around money and has led to deep frustration. When coaches focus on the manifesting power of their clients without supporting their behavioral changes, financial trust-building, and tactical action with money, the client is left feeling excited, but not actually able to utilize their true power. Clients feel like they have the power to make money, don’t make money, and then wonder what’s wrong - or worse, wonder why they hired a money coach in the first place, thus cheapening the whole industry.
I want you to know your value and power & be able to apply it; not only because we both believe in it, but because you can see your community reflect your power back to you. You’re not alone in this. I want you to be wealthy, not just have the idea or appearance of wealth. I want your financial flow to match your values. I want money to feel nourishing, fun, and powerful.
Why? Because it’s as good for me and our community as it is for you.
We are financially connected to each other whether we like it or not, and I’d prefer to like it.
So what do we do, where do we turn, in order to BE in financial integrity?
We need a Holistic Approach to Money: Financial Wellness
Financial wellness is the ease you feel when you spend money on something that matters to you, knowing that you either already have enough. It’s receiving money that matches your worth and not feeling guilty. It’s giving money that you can afford to give and trusting that it’s going to the right place and not feeling like you have to manage or measure the outcome. Financial wellness is a practice of nourishment in our integrity and most joyful flow.
It’s not financial wellness if only wealthy people can access it. It’s not financial wellness if we exclude the wealthy from our communities or healing processes. Financial wellness is personal, communal, political and is measured by our joy, nourishment, and integrity. To get us there, we need Ontological Financial Wellness Coaches.
Your Financial Wellness Journey
Your journey begins with you consenting for me to trick you.
WHAT?! What does tricking me have to do with integrity?! Rude!
Yeah. I know. In order to bring our unseen, limiting patterns and beliefs into the light, we have to trick our brilliant minds by giving them a job so we can just BE who we are and observe our truth.
Mindfulness practices often work this way. Mindful people count rosaries, recite chants or mantras, or focus on breathing to practice bringing our “being” to the forefront of our focus. I use my Money Mindset Quiz and the archetypes I developed to dive past your conscious understanding and highlight previously unseen financial attachment patterns. Tricking our minds allows our whole truths to shine, not just the parts of ourselves we “approve of.”
Once we can name your limiting patterns & beliefs, we discover their origins. There is no shame, blame, or guilt allowed here. We all inherit our money beliefs - we come by them honestly. Those limiting patterns & beliefs are not our fault, but they are our responsibility to change if we want to feel differently about money.
We sort out what to keep and what to release. We grieve change and loss. We celebrate what we can be proud of. We discover and name your actual values, not the ones you were told to have. Then we allow ourselves to dream.
In the dream phase, all things are possible. You could win the lottery, find your calling, meet the right person, build the perfect business - whatever you want. You can feel good about money however you want. Dreaming is vital to breaking toxic financial patterns of abuse and is the bridge between mindsets and being, the bridge between thinking and acting with integrity.
This is the stage where many underdeveloped money coaches stop their services. It’s dangerous and irresponsible.
Once we have a dream to move toward, then it’s practice time!
We choose some behaviors to try on and you decide the dosage. Then you take action, see how it feels, and refine dosages as needed. Some practices could include giving a trusted person $50 and asking them to spend it on you in a way that they think you’ll like. It could look like giving away money without strings attached, or maybe buying an item that has no purpose other than to bring you joy. They sound simple but are skillfully designed to hit your specific pain point with love and trust. We practice in the “growth zone” where we feel a little uncomfortable, curious, and safe. This is about stretching but not breaking or over-working our “muscles”. We practice until it feels like our new normal, until our unhealthy money mindset becomes a memory of a life long-passed.
Practicing = choosing + being + doing, it is how we become. We walk the journey of being wealthy on our own terms, together. We feel more ease and joy within ourselves and our communities – and it feels like heaven on earth.
